Old Czech Christmas for Poser

Old Czech Christmas for Poser

The arrangement of furniture in the village living room had its established customs until the first half of the 19th century and only changed in the case of extraordinary events and holidays. Approximately a quarter of its living area was occupied by a brick stove coated with clay. Later, tile stoves were added to the oven, surrounded by wooden benches on two sides. Above the stoves, a rack for drying laundry or herbs was usually hung. In the diagonally opposite corner, there was a table with chairs and a corner bench. The corner above the table was reserved for religious props and pictures. Typically, in the corner opposite or across the stove, the bed of the head of the household and the housewife was placed. Other members of the household slept on the stove or on the bench.Sleeping on the stove became a sort of symbol of the Czech national character - "peci (stove)-válství (laying)," or the reluctance to engage in anything and rather prefer staying in the warmth of home.
The additional furnishings in the living room varied depending on the family's prosperity. However, there was usually a chest for storing personal items, clothing, and laundry. Additionally, various shelves for mugs, plates, and a dish rack were common. The dining table served as a versatile workspace for various household activities.
The established arrangement of furniture in living rooms underwent a transformation in the second half of the 19th century. The table moved from the corner to the center of the room, and additional pieces of furniture were added along the walls. In wealthier cottages, these included sideboards, display cabinets, canopy beds, various cabinets, and dressers with drawers.
Our model represents a typical living room of a family from the middle village class – neither too wealthy nor too poor. It even includes a separate room for grandparents, known as "vejminek." For lighting, a kerosene lamp is now in use, though the arrangement of other furniture remains somewhat traditional. The living room is captured during the celebration of the Christmas holidays, featuring a Christmas tree adorned with folk straw or wooden decorations. On the stove, Christmas Eve dinner is being prepared – fish soup, and "kuba," a dish made from mushrooms and groats.
